Ganga Aarti
ॐ गंगे च यमुने चैव गोदावरी सरस्वति । नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरी जलेऽस् मिन् सन्निधिं कुरु ॥
O sacred rivers — Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati, Narmada, Sindhu, Kaveri —
be present in this water and purify.
An offering of light and devotion to Maa Ganga — performed at the sacred ghats
where prayers meet the river

What is Ganga Aarti Puja
Ganga Aarti is a ritual of offering light (deep / diya) to Maa Ganga, performed at river ghats as a mark of gratitude, surrender, and invocation.
The aarti is conducted with deep, incense, sound of bells, and mantra chanting, symbolizing:
-
Reverence to the river as a living divine presence
-
Offering of light to remove darkness (inner and outer)
-
A moment of alignment — where individual prayer connects with cosmic flow
It is traditionally performed at sunrise and sunset, with evening aarti being the most prominent.
When This Was Performed — and What Followed
-
Ganga Aarti is not a modern ritual — its roots go back to Vedic and Puranic reverence of rivers as divine mothers (नदी देवता).
-
In the Rigveda (Nadi Sukta), rivers including Ganga are invoked as life-giving and purifying forces, after which they are regarded as carriers of prosperity, purity, and sustenance
-
In the Bhagavata Purana, Ganga descends from the heavens through Lord Shiva to earth, after which she becomes the purifier of sins and liberator of souls
-
In the Ramayana, Ganga is worshipped and revered during journeys and transitions,
after which protection, safe passage, and fulfillment of purpose are ensured
-
in the Skanda Purana (Ganga Mahatmya), offering prayers and performing rituals on Ganga’s banks is described as highly meritorious,
after which papa kshaya (reduction of karmic burden) and spiritual upliftment are attained
